On March 30, 2009, a press conference was held by the Severn RiverKeeper to announce the first report card on the health of the Severn River. The news was sobering as the river is sick and getting sicker. The river was awarded an overall health score of 45% and a C -. I video taped the entire one hour press conference and edited the content down to less than 10 minutes. Here you will find the technical presentations that really give a clear assessment of the current state of the river. Following the video, you will find a copy of the actual report
We have a beautiful river that needs some tender love and care from the citizens. It seems that many State leaders now understand the situation and are making good efforts to help the river. One of those efforts is the mandatory use of low nitrogen septic systems for new houses and when septic systems fail. There is also an effort through legislation to clarify development for marine activities in the tidal wetlands. This could prevent future construction of massive piers and bridges through wetlands as just occurred in Sullivan Covel.
